Jamaican
Blue Mountain Coffee?
According to Jamaican law and as a courtesy to our potential customers
we
are not allowed to call our coffee "Blue Mountain Coffee".
This protects
a product that doesn't exactly exist and a monopoly that very much exists.
The
Coffee Board of the Government of Jamaica defines Blue Mountain Coffee as follows:
Blue
Mountain coffee is grown in the area defined in the schedule of the Coffee Industry
Regulations 1953 (Regulation 2).
This coffee has an intense aroma, fairly good
body, sweet taste and free of all off-flavours.
1. Blue Mountain No. 1
Screen:
17/18 = 96% Minimum (without Elephant Beans)
Appearance: Bluish-Green, Uniform
Defects:
2% Maximum (Foreign Matter, Black and Sour Beans not allowed)
By coincidence
(and as a well-kept secret) The Coffee Board defines a similar coffee as:
2.
High Mountain Supreme
Jamaican High Mountain Supreme is coffee grown at high altitudes
in areas outside of the Blue Mountain.
This coffee has a fine aroma, fairly good
body and acidity, free from all off-flavours.
Screen: 17/18 = 96% Minimum (without
Elephant Beans)
Appearance: Bluish Green, Green, Greenish and Uniform
Defects:
2% Maximum (Foreign Matter, Black and Sour Beans not allowed)
Looks identical
to me!
What isn't told and what the Coffee Board goes on to outline is that
"High
Mountain Supreme" (which might be grown across the road from "Blue
Mountain")
is actually a better bean-grade than "Blue Mountain #2 or
Blue Mountain #3.
Of course sellers of "Blue Mountain Coffee" do not
want the consumer to know this.
Undoubtedly, there exists specified amounts of
"Blue Mountain Coffee"
which is the finest coffee in the world!
But
if there was as much "Blue Mountain Coffee" as is marketed,
Jamaica
would have to be the size of Texas. In reality Jamaica is the size of Rhode Island.
The
"Blue Mountain Region" is smaller than Chicago.
(caribbean map here)
So
what exists here is the selling of a name and/or image as opposed to a quality.
What
also isn't told is that 90% of the "Blue Mountain Coffee" goes to Japan
where it fetches $50 a pound.
So Jamaica would be silly to let Americans have
it for $10 per pound.
And that miniscule amount mentioned above of "Blue
Mountain Coffee"
which is the finest coffee in the world?
The Jamaicans
drink that themselves (they obviously ain't dummies).
So what are you getting
as "Blue Mountain Coffee"?
Possibly legal (by definition) "Blue
Mountain Coffee"- but you are not getting your money's worth.
We invite you
